Track trek stirs chaos
THE SUMMER OF HELL has brought the Summer of the Zombie!
A drunk, shambling and apparently oblivious man wandering through a Greenwich Village subway tunnel wreaked havoc on thousands of morning rush hour commutes Thursday.
An uptown 3 train operator was forced to slam on the brakes when the man (photo inset), dressed in white shorts and a blue, white and orange shirt, was spotted walking the tracks between the Christopher St. and 14th St. stations about 8 a.m.
The unidentified wanderer then decided to take a rest and stretched out across the tracks.
“He was laying down, then got up and sat on (the) tracks feet from first train car,” commuter Casie Jordan tweeted.
The MTA quickly rerouted 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 trains in the area, causing massive delays.
“Power was turned off to all tracks between 34th St.-Penn Station to Christopher St. after he was observed attempting to touch the third rail and running along the tracks between stations,” MTA spokeswoman Amanda Kwan said in a statement.
Police grabbed the man and pulled him off the tracks by 8:30 a.m. He was taken to an area hospital for a psycological examination, officials said. Charges were pending.
