A challenge for Mayor de Blasio

-

Brooklyn: How can the mayor of New York City justify the following occurrences during his regime?: He was totally disrespectful to the family of an assassinated police officer, one of 35,000 who risk life and limb every minute of each day. He ran off to Europe, traveling 77 weekdays outside of the city. The education system keeps bad teachers on payroll with full salary. They are now being released into classrooms to deform the minds of our children.

Homelessness is getting so out of hand the NYPD cleared the stations on a rare occasion when the mayor rode the subway.

He rides from Gracie Mansion to the Prospect Park YMCA in a police-escorted SUV. He also wants his legal fees paid by John Q. Public. If Warren Wilhelm Sr. were alive he’d be thrilled to know that his worthless offspring, “Read my lips — I don’t care Mayor Putz,” changed his name. Anthony P. Flynn

A lousy ‘View’

Jackson Heights: Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar of “The View” are hypocrites. They never had the decency to comment on Police Detective Miosotis Familia’s murder. She was a wonderful single mom raising three children, with one in college, yet when Police Officer Darren Wilson shot Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., they commented for weeks about that. Shame on them.

Richard Hilliard, FDNY (ret.)

Don’t mess with history

Jamesburgh, N.J.: I am 91 years old and grew up in the Fort Greene-Clinton Hill neighborhood. I was in the U.S. Navy serving with Admiral Halsey’s fleet until World War II ended. I am a history buff and don’t believe anyone should ever, ever change the world’s history of wars. Certain politicians should stick to our main problems in this growing country, not try to get publicity as Rep. Yvette Clarke did (“B’klyn says: Make it all about the base,” Aug. 8). She is a nice person and I met her once or twice when I was the Republican district leader in the Nelson Rockefeller Republican Club. She is a nice person is all I can say about her. Rocco Roy Vanasco

All should serve

College Point: Bringing back the draft won’t work. When they allowed all those draft-dodgers to return back to the United States from Canada, it was an insult to every man and woman who served in Vietnam. They should make it mandatory for all men and women to serve two years when they reach the age of 18. Many countries do this and it is very successful. It will make better men and women out of them. James Reilly

U.S. Marine Corps. (ret.)

Our hero

Brooklyn: Thank you to Voicers Arnold and Barbara Fortgang for honoring Army Medic Sgt. Jim McCloughan. As a former combat infantry soldier in Vietnam, I owe my life to men like Sgt. McCloughan, who is truly a hero in every sense of the word. Donald Trump is a coward in my eyes, too. On many a day my feet hurt after “humping the boonies” in the central highlands, mile after mile for days on end. Today at age 69, I still can’t believe that anyone from that era was able to avoid the draft because of sore feet. Why didn’t I think of this excuse back then? Who knew? Like the Fortgangs, I am also embarrassed, ashamed and disgusted with our present-day White House occupant. Lou J. Martinez

Help wanted

Whitestone: At the rate Trump is firing his top staff, we will need some of the illegal immigrants to fill the void. Sally DeFelice

Too small for two

Brooklyn: I’m happy to read “Scare-amucci” is out of the White House. Trump can now enjoy reading more press coverage of his own ego-antics rather than share Daily News space with ego-maniac Scare-amucci.

Rose M. Walsh

A song of hope

Staten Island: Here’s the candidate’s creed: The people are pleading for change. Can I arrange? It’s possible. And, my pledge, if I fail in my acclaim, it’s possible and with that thought in mind I shall endure, without remorse, the pain of blame.

Charles Cama

Our immigrant neighbors

Brooklyn: To Voicer Ann Rychlenski: I would suggest that you and President Trump both visit neighborhoods such as Jackson Heights and Flushing — Queens being where Trump grew up. You will find immigrants who come from countries where there was not an opportunity to learn English but who came here and learned it well. You and the President will meet immigrants who do not have college degrees but who have a work ethic that would persons born here, such as me, to shame. You and the President will meet immigrants who would never consider welfare but will take any job to pay their own way or open their own businesses. Why would you want to deny other worthy person the opportunity your family has had in this country? Karen Levine

Lining up

Manhattan: Please slam the door on all these deadbeat Russians who come here and go directly from JFK to the welfare office.

Tommy Reynolds

Nothing doing

Freehold, N.J.: The grand poohbahs have been looking into possible collusion between President Trump and the Russians for about 14 months. The only thing they have found is the knob to the rest room. As far as the other crimes he may have committed, if they start looking now they may still have that investigation ongoing by the time the reelection process is in full bloom in 2020. Richard Doll

All hail

Howard Beach: When truth and reality are closing in on Donald Trump, he runs for the ego embrace of his red-hat sycophants.

Steven Schwartz

Golden geese

Lindenhurst, L.I.: Re “Tax rich for rail fix” (Aug. 7): Nothing could be more wrong. Did you ever wonder who supports the orchestras, the ballet, the New York State Theater, Vivian Beaumont Theater, PBS stations, museums, zoos, aquariums and conservation projects? It’s the rich people. While it is a tax write-off for them, the rest of the people reap the benefits. New Yorkers need their money exactly where it is.

Harvey Beyer

Beep, beep

Woodmere, L.I.: For all the people out there sitting in your car at a red light yapping on your cell phone — when the light turns green and you don’t move for 5 or 10 seconds, you suck! (You know who you are.) Mike Schmidt

A side of misery with that?

Jersey City: The stock market is reaching all-time highs daily. One of the biggest winners has been McDonald’s, but not everyone at McDonald’s shares in the prosperity. The shady and ruthless executives make out like the bandits they are. The greedy shareholders are obviously cashing in, but the hard-working employees have not seen a dime. Their wages are still poverty-level. Unless someone or something can motivate these workers to join together and organize so they can bring these crooks/executives to the bargaining table, they will always get the short end of it. Wake up, workers of America. The parade is passing you by. Fred Burns

Mets out of shape

Bayside: In this dreadfully disappointing Mets season, it seems to me the team should have been in far better condition, therefore possibly preventing the numerous injuries that occurred to key players, especially pitchers. In the final analysis, isn’t getting into proper playing condition the primary function of spring training? Sarah Alboher

Keep on swinging

Corey Sipkin Manchester, N.J: I agree with Voicer Jed Dowell about all the changes in baseball, except for one: Home run contests, prior to the All-Star Game. There was a TV station in the 1950s and 1960s called “Home Run Derbys.” The winner would continue to bat against other players until he lost to one of them. I remember Mickey Mantle winning seven shows in a row. Every time he won, he collected $100. The loser would get $50. The show was on Channel 9. Seeing the picture of Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle on Voice of the People brought a tear to my eyes. Thank you so much for that! John S. Giacchi
