Nicole’s illegal anti-Blaz ad is a real doze-y
NICOLE MALLIOTAKIS’ new campaign ad hits the mayor for napping, but her own campaign must have dozed off reading the city’s campaign finance rules.
The 30-second television spot, which features the Staten Island assemblywoman and Republican mayoral candidate in a boxing gym, lacks a spoken disclosure saying who paid for the ad, which is required by the city’s campaign finance laws and regulations.
Asked about it by the Daily News, the campaign first said its understanding was that a spoken disclosure was only needed for radio spots. A short time later, a spokesman said the ad was being fixed to comply with the rules.
“An error was made during the production of the ad and is being fixed today. A compliant ad will be on the air by tomorrow,” spokesman Rob Ryan said.
The ad did feature a written disclaimer saying it was paid for by Nicole for New York City. But the city’s Campaign Finance Board rules — which outline how to comply with its campaign finance law — require candidates to go further.
The ad has been airing since Friday, so the campaign could face penalties for airing it — though those would not be determined until after the election.
