Blow to AG on sanctuary cities
A FEDERAL judge has handed a defeat to Attorney General Jeff Sessions as he looks to punish so-called sanctuary cities such as New York.
The city of Chicago sued after the nation’s top prosecutor said that local governments that do not cooperate with immigration authorities to his liking would lose out on crucial crimefighting funds.
U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber granted a request by the Windy City to put a “nationwide” injunction on Sessions’ decision, meaning he cannot deny the funds until after the legal process is finished.
Leinenweber wrote that the case against the AG had a “likelihood of success” that supported the stoppage.
Sessions slammed Chicago specifically for a “culture of lawlessness” in a speech after the suit was filed last month, though other cities including New York have also challenged him over his immigrant crackdown.
