Elex $ pays Russia-probe defense
PRESIDENT Trump is dipping into his reelection fund for lawyers to protect him from getting burned as the Russia investigation heats up, according to reports.
People close to the situation told Reuters said that campaign money, and cash from the Republican National Committee is paying for attorneys as investigations in the House, Senate, FBI and special counsel’s office look into possible collusion between Moscow and Trump’s campaign.
Federal election laws allow politicians’ election war chests to be used for legal issues surrounding their candidacies, though experts say Trump will be the first President in modern history to use the funds for a criminal probe.
The RNC spent more than $230,000 for Trump lawyers Jay Sekulow, who received $131,250, and John Dowd, who received $100,000, according to CNN.
It was not immediately clear how and how much Trump is paying Ty Cobb, a veteran litigator overheard discussing the President’s legal defense at a Washington steakhouse this week.
