LARRY DAVID INSISTS that Richard Lewis was dead wrong when he told us last week that after getting out of rehab in 1994, Lewis was rebuffed by David for asking to borrow $1 million to get his life back on track.

“He just said, ‘I want you to give me a million dollars.’ He never said the word ‘loan,’ ” David (photo) insists, sounding like the character we all know from HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” which premiered its ninth season at the SVA Theater on Wednesday. “I would never refuse Richard Lewis anything.”

David concedes that his wife at the time may have shot down the idea of loaning or giving Lewis cash, but he wouldn’t. “He’s got the whole story wrong,” David recalls. “He wanted me to give him a million dollars, he didn’t even say he needed the money. He just said he wanted it! He didn’t say, ‘I’m in bad straits right now. Can you loan me a million dollars?’ If he had, I would have!”

Hearing both David and Lewis tell their sides of the story sounds like an episode of their popular HBO comedy.

“I told him he’s an idiot because he got the story all wrong,” David said. “Made me look like a bad friend.”

Lewis, who performs at Caroline’s on Broadway on Oct. 13 and 14, insisted when we spoke to him by phone that it was David who’s been getting the story wrong for more than 20 years.

“I promised him I would pay him back,” Lewis recalled. “To this day, I know I would never take a million dollars and not try to monthly or yearly pay him back, but he doesn’t believe me.” One thing David says is for sure is that when “Curb Your Enthusiasm” comes back to HBO Sunday after a six-year break, it’ll be worth the wait.

“It just felt like the right time,” he said. “I missed all of it and I wanted to do it again because nothing is more fun and gives me more pleasure.”
