Organ donor record set in New York

NEW YORK set a national organ donation record last year for the most paper enrollments in a single day, a feat health officials are hoping to top at a sign-up session Wednesday.

In 2016, 4,000 people in New York signed up in one day to donate their organs, a national record, according to LiveOnNY, a nonprofit organ-procurement organization. Even so, a New Yorker dies every 18 hours waiting for an organ transplant because there aren’t enough residents registered in the program.

There are currently 10,000 New Yorkers who are waiting for a transplant.

More than 90% of New Yorkers support organ donation. However, just 30% are registered. LiveOnNY hopes to change that Wednesday with its third annual Organ Donor Enrollment Day.

The group plans to get the word out with ads on the subway’s WiFi network and in elevators across the city. Former Yankee Bernie Williams and former Jets quarterback Boomer Esiason will also promote the effort during an 11:30 a.m. WFAN program at the Brookfield Place shopping center in Manhattan’s Battery Park City.
