Ditka’s anthem of ignorance

- Larry McShane

SOUNDS LIKE Mike took a knee — to the head.

The tough guy ex-Chicago Bears coach, a critic of the National Anthem protests on NFL sidelines, asserted he was unaware of any social injustice in the United States for the last century.

“All of a sudden, it’s become a big deal now, about oppression,” the 77-yearold Ditka (photo) said on a “Monday Night Football” radio pregame show. “There has been no oppression in the last 100 years that I know of.”

The period in question included Ditka Japanese internment camps during World War II, along with the battle for racial equality that culminated with the Civil Rights Act in 1964 and the Voting Rights Act a year later.

Ex-Jets Hall of Famer Joe Namath, appearing Tuesday on “Fox & Friends,” was quick to chide Ditka for the remarks.

“Look up the meaning of oppression,” advised Namath. “Look up the definition of oppression, and you understand that it’s obviously taken place.”
