A President unable to console

-

Washington: Whether you like or dislike the President, unless you do not read or watch the news, you cannot be surprised he’d deal with a war widow in such an amazingly insulting manner (“A grave new low on G.I.s,” Oct. 18). No one can argue that, through his speech and behavior, he ran, probably, the crudest campaign in the history of the presidency, and for U.S. politics that’s as low as you can go.

Throughout the campaign, and into his presidency, he’s said and tweeted the ugliest statements to other politicians, of both parties, women, a Gold Star family, a true American hero and POW, a Mexican-American judge and Mexican-Americans in general, minorities, the media; he’s incited violence at his rallies, told obvious lies repeatedly and been ignorant of history and established fact — the list is too long to complete. If he’s said anything to bring us together, or anything not grounded in narcissism, I do not remember it.

While, unsurprisingly, he’s found nice things to say about very repulsive people — Sheriff Joe Arpaio, convicted of refusing to stop his illegal behavior, whom Trump pardoned; Nazis, Klansmen and avowed racists; Kim Jong Un, Rodrigo Duterte, Vladimir Putin, AbdelFattah el-Sisi, Recep Erdogan and others; who’s next, ISIS?

At this point there’s very little disgusting behavior Trump hasn’t engaged in. But he will, because he can’t stop being himself.

Jeffrey Michael Bolden Ramsey, N.J.: I know many people who, almost 10 months in, are becoming numb to the morally reprehensible behavior and comments from their President, but you, as journalists, cannot and should not be. The comments that Trump made to the family of U.S. Army Sgt. La David Johnson were vile and disgusting and should not have been reported on page 11, essentially deeming it business as usual or just more of the same. The disintegration of morals and decorum displayed by our sociopathic leader needs to be out in the open for all to see in headlines screaming from the newsstands and vending racks. Maybe keep sports on the back page, and less relevant and important stories on page 11. Sherry Ahearn

An awful person

South Wellfleet, Mass.: Reflecting upon President Trump recently stating to the widow of one of the four Green Beret soldiers killed in an ambush by ISIS allied fighters on Oct 4, that her husband, “knew what he signed up for. . . but when it happens it hurts anyway,” the President is more than “a moron” as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was alleged to have said. Trump, who during Vietnam received four draft deferments for education and one for having bone spurs in his heels, is a despicable human being.

Mike Rice

A disgraceful President

Astoria: Not only does President Trump have no idea how the military works, he clearly has no idea what being a compassionate human is. That he can be so cavalier in his comments to the family of soldiers killed in combat underscores how ill-suited he is to both his role as President and commander-in-chief of our armed forces. What a disgrace!

Deposit this

Lindenhurst, N.J.: I don’t know which is worse. Donald Trump crassly offering to cut a check to a Gold Star father or the Gold Star father expressing his disappointment at not getting paid. My father would have told Donald Trump where he could shove his $25,000 check. Scott Daly

White House bully

Manhattan: Is there anyone out there who knew Trump’s parents and can tell me how they raised their son to become the thin skinned, mean-spirited bully of today? To lie with a straight face? To belittle people and call them names? What happened in his upbringing that made him so full of himself that he cannot see anything beyond his nose? I did not vote for him, but he is the President and I want to respect him. But he does and says things that are so hurtful and spiteful that it is getting more and more difficult to not be ashamed of the person who is occupying the oval office. Of all the things he has said and done that I thought would be the thing that would turn off people, what he said about the widow of the fallen soldier is what did it for me. God help us.

Big omission

Manhattan: It’s quite amazing how Voicer Jo Ann Lee Frank can discuss sexual harassment and abuse by eliding from Clarence Thomas to Donald Trump without ever bothering to mention Bill Clinton. Amazing! Only a Democrat could manage that.

Look what got printed

Edison, N.J.: Colin Kaepernick donated to a charity named in honor of a convicted cop killer who’s on FBI most wanted list. Assata’s Daughters is named for Assata Shakur, whose real name is Joanne Chesimard. Chesimard escaped from prison is a wanted fugitive in Cuba. The Daily News won’t print this, but all you’ve gotta do is look it up. Tom Jeffs

Bigotry all around

Manhattan: Voicer Phil Giuliano wonders why “the media keeps giving race-baiting provocateurs like Tamika Mallory a platform when they are completely irrational.” Mallory had complained that she was arbitrarily kicked off a plane and blamed it on white male aggression. Giuliano correctly if unnecessarily states that “white men do not have a monopoly on racism and bigotry.” I don’t know if Mallory’s allegations are true or not, but she at least was there. Giuliano was not, and he offers nothing except his own bigotry to back up his assumptions. Sam Soffer

Bomber-Dodger hatred

Brooklyn: Mayor de Blasio is not the only New Yorker who is not rooting for the Yankees (“OK, it Sawx, but Blaz can’t pull for the Yanks,” Oct. 18). I am a lifetime New Yorker — 76 years to be exact — and I do not and cannot support the Yankees. In fact, I am a YH, a Yankee Hater. Back in the ’50s I was a Brooklyn Dodger fan and almost all Dodger fans hated the Yanks. When the Dodgers left Brooklyn, it was difficult to decide who we hated more — the Yankees or the Dodgers. If the Yankees win their series and the Dodgers theirs, I and many other New Yorkers will boycott the World Series and hope for a tie.

Hit the road, Bill

Port Washington, L.I.: I think the mayor should move to Boston along with his ball deflator and Apple Watch. What a classless act, one I’d expect from D.C.

Richard Bonk

Hooray for Harper

Kansas City, Kan.: Love, love, love, John Harper’s writing (“Bronx is booming,” Oct. 18)! And love my Yankees who I’ve cheered for since my dad, a journalist, brainwashed me! Keep up the good work! Carol Pidcoe

Monster mash

Shaftsbury, Vt.: Dr. Cashman Frankenstein and his stitched together dead-body zombies won another game at Castle Dracula in the Bronx Zoo. The mercenary $135 million zombie army that Dr. Frankenstein bought and paid for with Yankee money is wreaking havoc in the American League. The poor underpaid Houston Astros are but a footnote in the Zombie Army’s quest for a World Series ring. Dr. Frankenstein using his mastermind genius for MLB antitrust exemptions and collusive practices has cornered the trade market in the league. Putting the spurs to fair trade and fair competition he has used secret and deceptive cheating to rob the league of the best players. It’s win it all or nothing with the good doctor. Paving the way to victory, Frankenstein terrorized the Astros who left Castle Dracula in a hurry. Meanwhile, the LA- LA- LA Dodgers are beating up on the chump Cubbies and sealing their awful fate. Having borrowed Godzilla from Japan for the series they hope to burn Frankenstein up with hot LA smog and polluted breath. So, it looks to be Frankenstein vs. Godzilla in the World Series. Games will be played in honor of Raymond Burr and the first Godzilla movie in 1956. “Godzilla, King of Monsters.” Go go go, Godzilla! Tom King

Kimmel and the King

WPLG/AP Brooklyn: Thanks to Jimmy Kimmel returning to his Brooklyn hometown, hosting his show at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and having my favorite icon of all time, Howard Stern. When the Stern fans get together to worship our King of All Media, it makes for a memorable night!
