If you’re not ready to bid summer goodbye, head to Myrtle Beach

- BY GINA PACE

For a lingering taste of summer — without high-season prices — visit Myrtle Beach in the fall. There’s still a bit beach weather to be had — high temperatures in October average around 75 degrees — and if the possibility of a hurricane doesn’t scare you off, some great deals as well.

If it’s too cool for a swim, other outdoor activities are more enjoyable now that the intense heat and humidity of summer has faded.

A must here is the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade. Stop by a classic arcade and play Skee-Ball and stroll into retro souvenir shops like the Gay Dolphin Gift Cove (gaydolphin.com), which has been operating since 1946. The store is jam-packed with postcards, mini lighthouses, wind chimes, life-sized pirate statues and more. The most impressive section is the one holding seashells, which come in all shapes and colors.

Make time to get a bird’s-eye view of the beach and boardwalk from the SkyWheel (skywheel.com; adult tickets are $14), a nearly 200-foot-tall Ferris wheel with glass-enclosed, air-conditioned gondolas.

The boardwalk has hot dogs, pizza and ice cream galore, or take the 10-minute drive to Croissants Bistro & Bakery (croissants.net). Pastries are baked on-site and the coffee is roasted here, but a staff favorite is the bistro’s take on the regional classic Shrimp and Grits, served with andouille sausage and fried green tomatoes ($16).
