Pier into the future

-

The promise of a glorious performing arts center floating off the West Side of Manhattan was always too stupendous to succumb to the small minds paying big legal retainers who drained to the dregs the ample goodwill of the island’s visionary mover and shaker, Barry Diller. Let the chorus sing to the accompaniment of lapping waves and a stunning sunset: Pier55, recently declared dead, is once again a go. All thanks to Gov. Cuomo, who coaxed back Diller and his $130 million-plus in promised funding and held the opponents at bay by brokering a plan to protect marine life, while enabling the completion of the still-unfinished Hudson River Park surrounding the pier.

We’ll thank you now, gov. And if the park comes to fruition, the whole city will thank you later.
