Little geniuses everywhere

-

First, a public service announcement: Parents across the city have until Nov. 13 to sign up their little ones to take the exam to qualify for special schooling for gifted and talented kids. All you have to do is go online and enroll your pre-kindergartener through second grader, for free.

But ultimately, equal access to special classes for the smartest kids shouldn’t depend on the whims of parents. New York needs to take a strong step to ensure that everybody gets a fair shot at being challenged.

How? Opt every pre-K kid into the free test by default. Meaning, parents can then say no — but don’t have to go out of their way to say yes.

The shift is necessary because, while citywide about a quarter of 4-year-olds take the test, in poorer neighborhoods, the numbers are next to nil. On the Upper West Side, 84% of tots get evaluated for G&T classes; in the South Bronx, only 7% do.

As a result, unknown numbers of whip-smart boys and girls get no access to classes that might best excite their minds.

After heading up a task force on the subject, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams are leading the charge for universal testing. Mayor de Blasio, Mr. Equity, must get on the bus.
