Power play by Catalonia big
MAYBE HE can eventually pardon himself.
The fugitive head of Catalonia’s bid for independence announced his campaign Saturday for regional president — even as he faced arrest upon return to Spain.
The unusual circumstances were further illustrated by Carles Puigdemont’s campaign rollout in Bruges, Belgium, roughly 800 miles north of Barcelona.
The separatist movement leader, joined by four government officials, left their homeland after the Catalonian parliament declared independence from Spain.
Spanish authorities immediately fired leaders in Puigdemont’s government and set Dec. 21 for new elections. The presidential hopeful, given his status as a wanted man, will run his campaign from abroad.
He was joined by 90 of his supporters who made the long trip for the announcement in Bruges. Puigdemont currently faces extradition to his homeland.
