Gunning for record on Black Fri.

- Terence Cullen

SHOPPERS GETTING a jump on holiday season bargains on Black Friday apparently had guns high on their lists.

The FBI received 203,086 background check requests for firearm sales Friday, according to the bureau.

The heavy volume set a new record for such requests in a single day, outpacing milestones set the previous two years.

The total number of requests jumped 9.4% from the previous single-day record of 185,713 requests sent to the FBI last year, also on Black Friday. There were 185,345 requests on the big shopping day in 2015.

The amount of guns actually sold might be even higher than 200,000. That’s because a single background request — sent to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System — can cover the sale of multiple weapons in a single transaction.

The new record comes as the nation grapples with a string of mass shootings, and lawmakers attempt to fix the flawed background checks system.

Notable among the shootings was the Nov. 5 massacre at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, that left 26 dead.

Gunman Devin Kelley, who was kicked out of the Air Force in 2012 for assaulting his wife and her young son, was able to buy an assault rifle in 2016 because the Air Force neglected to send the background check system crucial information that would have blocked a sale.
