Bowles not 1 on hot seat
NOBODY expected this. Todd Bowles was supposed to be the New York football coach on the hot seat, the one getting canned midseason after losses mounted. Ben McAdoo was supposed to be the man leading his team to postseason glory.
But sports are unpredictable, and those hypotheticals never came to fruition. The Giants fired McAdoo on Monday, along with general manager Jerry Reese, after Big Blue lost its 10th game this weekend in Oakland. Bowles earned his fifth win Sunday and has the Jets clinging to postseason hopes. The Jets coach offered his thoughts on the housecleaning in East Rutherford.
“It’s unfortunate. Every situation is different. I can’t control what goes on in that building,” Bowles said Monday on a conference call. “You hate to see a fellow guy let go. But it’s part of the business we have.”
Bowles refused to address his own job security Monday.
“I’m just trying to get the team better,” Bowles said. “I’m not going to discuss my job.”
Bowles appreciates some of the strides he’s seen from his group this year.
“Guys are working hard and they’re playing together,” Bowles said. “We’re fighting every week and we’re competing. I’m pleased about that, and we just got to go out and clean up some more mistakes and get better.”
Left tackle Kelvin Beachum offered a ringing endorsement for Bowles on his conference call.
“As a man and as a player, I love him. I’ll run through a wall for him. I’ve only been here for a year, and I love everything about him,” Beachum said. “That’s my coach. I hope I’m here for a long time and I hope he’s here for a long time, because when you have coaches like that — that you believe in, that you trust — it’s important and it’s good for the game and it’s good for our game as a team, especially with all the ebbs and flows we’ve had this season. He’s remained steady.” HOWARD SIMMONS DAILY NEWS
