Blaz’s surprise link to a 19th century mayor

IT’S ALL in the family at City Hall.

Mayor de Blasio has been found to have an unlikely distant relative — a Tammany Hallbacked mayor from the turn of the last century.

The genealogy company MyHeritage found that de Blasio and Robert Van Wyck are 11th cousins five times removed, with an English knight from the 15th century as a common ancestor.

“To find a genealogical connection between two of the most impactful and significant New Yorkers in the last 120 years is quite extraordinary and unexpected,” MyHeritage researcher Nitay Elboym told The Associated Press.

Van Wyck, a Democrat like de Blasio, was elected in 1897 on the slogan “To Hell with Reform,” and became the first mayor all five boroughs when New York City consolidated in 1898.

According to the genealogy company, both mayors can trace their ancestry back to Sir Thomas Boteler and his wife, Margaret.

Boteler was knighted in England in 1487. He and his wife are believed to be Van Wyck’s 10-times great-grandparents and de Blasio’s 15-times great-grandparents.

Still, the connection is not one de Blasio is likely to brag about — besides his connection to the corrupt Tammany machine, Van Wyck was tarnished by a scandal over allegations he got free shares of stock from a company that secured a monopoly over the city’s ice supply, and pursued a plan to double prices.

He lost reelection in 1901 to Republican reformer Seth Low, and his name is now best known for the traffic-clogged expressway in Queens that is named after him.

“It’s news to the mayor,” said de Blasio spokesman Eric Phillips. “Regardless of whether or not it’s true, I doubt you’ll see the mayor adding bedrooms at Gracie Mansion or more place settings at family get-togethers.”
