Saban: No Moore, no less a leader

-

Tuscaloosa, Ala.: As a person who lives in Alabama and cheers on the Alabama Crimson Tide, Chuck Modiano’s article is a sign of huge disrespect (“Nick Saban is a clueless, gutless, selfish coward for his silence on Roy Moore,” Dec. 14). Why does Saban’s opinion or lack of one show that he is gutless, clueless or a coward? You don’t see any of the big college football coaches such as Urban Meyer, Jimbo Fisher or Dabo Swinney with an opinion on the political spectrum in today’s society.

To call out Saban is just ignorant and a lack of due diligence. The Board of Trustees at the University of Alabama doesn’t care about Saban’s political opinion. They hired him to give Alabama the best football program he could possibly provide. He has done that for the university by giving players a better chance to succeed on the field and in the classroom.

He has also helped with the Nick’s Kids Foundation and, with the success of Alabama’s football program, provided millions of dollars to the city of Tuscaloosa and the academic department at the university.

I don’t know why it is necessary for a football coach — a football coach, not a political figure or analyst on CNN or Fox — to make his political views known. To allow Modiano to slander Saban is disrespectful and arrogant. Matt Morrell

Sage Saban

Tuscaloosa, Ala.: You must be living under a rock. Nick Saban and his wife have done more for families than anyone I know. Guess you never heard of “Nick’s Kids”! Please do your homework before you make an idiotic statement like this. It only makes the press look even worse than they really are. Will you do anything for headlines? Fake News, indeed! Gary Osborn

Leave Nick alone

Pelham, Ala.: I strongly object to this absurd article calling Nick Saban a gutless coward for not publicly speaking out against Roy Moore. Yes, I am a Bama fanatic and love our head coach. To think any head coach should get involved on any political level is no doubt the stupidest thing I’ve read anywhere. Chuck Modiano should be severely dealt with. He also needs to publicly apologize to Saban for trying to slander his good name. Modiano obviously doesn’t have anything to report to take a very low cheap shot at Coach Saban, who exemplifies perfection on the football field and does not need to focus on politics. His concentration is where it needs to be — on winning another national championship for the University of Alabama and its players. He’s not being paid to express his political views.

Right on, Chuck

Severn, Md.: Chuck Modiano’s article on Nick Saban is right on point. My wife is from Alabama, but attended Auburn. I follow the Alabama team because they are from her state. I am a New Yorker but left in my late teens to serve in the armed forces. It’s refreshing to see that the Daily News, albeit now a tabloid, still provides good reporting on societal issues. The students at Alabama should call for Saban’s firing. Jose Lachapel

Missed shot

Birmingham, Ala. That was over the top. More of a shot to the head then an article with substance. You guys don’t know the first thing about him. Scott Simon

What’s Nick to do?

West Palm Beach, Fla.: What do you suggest Nick Saban do? Hop on Twitter perhaps? Ha. Let me know of a time when Coach was asked about Roy Moore or the Senate race and he backed down. Do you suggest he just hold a press conference in the midst of playoff season? For someone who seems to have all the answers, you don’t provide any path to a solution. Matthew Hanford

On point

Los Angeles: Fantastic article . . . thank you for your spirit to illuminate. Evan Bullet James

Keep sports and politics apart

Nokomis, Fla.: I am somewhat vocal in my politics, and happy that Doug Jones won for the country. Nick Saban is no Dean Smith but why does he have to be? Michael Jordan didn’t take many stands. Was he persecuted? The people who send their kids to play football should make the decision clear. Jerry Fitzsimmons

Undignified exit

Boaz, Ala.: Apparently the days of media coverage with dignity are gone. The Daily News headline of “Screw you & horse you rode in on” (Dec. 13) reduced your paper to a definite rag. All the talk about Russia meddling in the election is laughable when we consider how our own media try so desperately to manipulate the opinions of American voters. I guess, as in the election of Moore versus Jones, you won. I won’t say that Alabama won or that Americans won. In the end will you still be proud? Is this what journalism is?

Sherry Stone Bronx: To Voicer Jeffrey P. Smith: I just became a big fan of yours. I am answering your call for all real New Yorkers to speak our minds against “It.” First of all, we have concrete evidence that “It” tried to kill as many people as possible, so forget all the questions and courts, just don’t give medical attention, shave “Its” hair and beard, throw “It” in a cell butt-naked with no bed and the window open, feed “It” once a day and make “Its” pork chop medium rare. If this sounds too harsh, then thank you. Like Smith, I’m tired of these “It” bastards who wanted to kill us. Gilbert Washington

Mark that date

Manhattan: For one moment, on Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, a special task force of the FBI and the police made Times Square and the Port Authority Bus Terminal bum-free. Joseph Pleho

Celebrity magnets

Bayonne, N.J.: With all these sexual harassment allegations, could you imagine what would happen if Elvis, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and so on had been accused? There would be chaos. Actually, most of these women threw themselves at these celebrities. That’s why I believe half of these accusations are bogus. Bob Manning

Home to us all

Brooklyn: Those who say “Go back to where you came from” have no idea why they are here. I am a black man and second-generation U.S. military serviceman. My uncle served in WWI; my two brothers served in WWII; I served in the Korean War. There were other nationalities in these wars. Don’t think that you alone made America what it is.

Respect where due

Madison, Wis.: Re: “Trump’s advisers reportedly take pains to keep him calm in briefings” (Dec. 14): This article would be better written if Fiona Hill was referred to as Dr. Hill, a title she is qualified for, according to Wikipedia. Perhaps referring her as “former Harvard fellow, Dr. Fiona Hill,” would get to the point that this distinguished woman was totally disrespected by Donald Trump simply because she is a woman and we all know women are so clerical. It is rather similar to Federal Reserve Chairman Dr. Janet Yellen not being offered a second term just because she is a woman. Joye Kuehn

Lock him up

Armonk, N.Y.: Funny how Voicer Geri Sabia says mean things about Bill and “Killary” but then JOHN BAZEMORE/AP ends it with “no mean things or threats”! Like President, like his staunch supporters! Jumping from blaming the victims to “women talk”?! Deplorable much? Bill had full process of investigation and impeachment, right thing to do. But, let’s do the same for the current President. He’s an embarrassment to the office he holds and to all men! Let’s investigate sexual harassment claims against this manchild. Fatmir Pushka

Some women are too sensitive

Ashland City, Tenn.: I’ve worked in construction for years — and have not run into major harassment issues. Yes, I’ve heard of some disgusting things being done, but the other side of the coin is that some females can’t take joking, teasing and occasional bawdiness from males. I served in the military, so I am more than used to how men can be by themselves, or when they forget when females are around. I’m more than fed up with some oversensitive, humorless females who make it harder for the rest of us to find jobs. Incidentally, I fled from that tax hell of New York State years ago, and now reside in the free state of Tennessee.

Crazy Mets fans

Bronx: I read that all NYC mental institutions are giving free tickets to New York Mets ballgames. Who else would go to see this car wreck of a team? The Mets and their fans should just go away already. Leo Barta
