Giants could do well with Riddick-McDaniels combo as GM and head coach
If the Giants loved what they saw and heard from Louis Riddick in his Thursday interview for the GM vacancy — which included lunch with Giants coowner John Mara — that likely would mean replacing the fired Jerry Reese and Ben McAdoo with a tantalizing new pair at GM and head coach:
The Riddick-McDaniels ticket of 2018, also known as Riddick, the former Washington and Philadelphia Eagles front office executive, and Josh McDaniels, Tom Brady’s offensive coordinator with the Patriots.
Dave Gettleman, the ex-Carolina Panthers GM who interviewed Wednesday, is considered the favorite to replace Reese with the Giants’ interview process guided by his great friend and former boss, ex-Giant GM Ernie Accorsi.
But Riddick is an attractive candidate on his own, with more than a decade of experience in NFL front offices, primarily as a former director of pro personnel in both Washington (2005-07) and Philadelphia (2010-13). And his pairing with McDaniels, if the former Broncos head coach (2009-10) chose to part with Brady and New England, could be too much for the Giants to pass up with a likely top-2 draft pick and quarterback transition coming up. Gettleman’s preferences for head coach are not public knowledge yet. Steve Wilks, the Panthers’ defensive coordinator who is a former assistant head coach with the Chargers (2011) and Carolina (2015-16) during its run to the Super Bowl, could be a candidate.
