Malady forces Solange to nix New Year’s gig

SOLANGE KNOWLES took to Instagram Wednesday to tell fans about a medical condition that will force her to miss the Afropunk festival in South Africa on New Year’s Eve.

The “Cranes in the Sky” singer revealed that she has been battling an autonomic disorder for the last five months.

It’s “been a journey that hasn’t been easy on me,” she wrote. “Sometimes I feel cool, and other times not so cool at all.

“It’s a complicated diagnoses (sic), and I’m still learning so much myself, but right now, my doctors are not clearing me for such an extended lengthy flight, and doing a rigorous show right after.”

Autonomic disorders affect the nervous system. Knowles, 31, did not share what type of autonomic disorder she was diagnosed with, but people with such disorders have trouble regulating their heart rate, blood pressure, digestion and body temperature.

Autonomic nervous system disorders could also be the result of Parkinson’s disease, cancer, autoimmune diseases, alcohol abuse or diabetes, according to NYU Langone.

Symptoms include dizziness or fainting when standing, abnormal sweating, urinary problems, vision problems and difficulties with digestion such as the loss of appetite or diarrhea and constipation.

She later tweeted about it, writing “guess I passed out,” though it’s unclear if she was suffering from the autonomic disorder at the time.

This past summer, Knowles told the crowd at a London festival that she had just concluded a three-day stint in the hospital and was told she shouldn’t perform. She also pulled out of a concert in Florida in November, citing health concerns.

Knowles made no mention of any type of treatment plan, but doctors typically prescribe medicine to regulate blood pressure, or to help increase the body’s water and salt retention, according to NYU Langone.

On Instagram, Knowles wrote that she wasn’t sure “what exactly or how much” she wanted to share.

“As a part of the self care that I’ve tried to encourage this past year, it needs to start with myself,” she posted. “And I’m looking forward to doing a better job of this [in] 2018.”
