Giants to meet Josh & Studes

-

THE Giants have reportedly scheduled to interview at least two of their coaching candidates at the end of the week. According to multiple reports, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will interview on Friday while former Broncos running backs coach Eric Studesville will meet with the team on Thursday, per The Record.

The Daily News has been reporting that McDaniels and Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia are the Giants’ top two candidates for the job.

McDaniels, 41, has won two Super Bowls as the Patriots offensive coordinator, a position he has held since 2012 and from 2006-08 prior to that. He remains a highlysought after head coaching candidate throughout the league with interviews scheduled for the Bears and Colts jobs this week despite an unsuccessful stint from 2009-10 as head coach of the Denver Broncos, where he went 11-17 before being fired.

Studesville, 50, was recently fired as the Broncos running backs coach and replaced McDaniels as interim head coach in Denver. He was the Giants’ running backs coach from 2001-03.

The Giants also requested on Tuesday to interview Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, according to ESPN. Shurmur,52, has experience as a head coach, going 9-23 with the Browns from 2011-12 and winning a game filling in for Chip Kelly as the Eagles’ interim coach 2015. The Giants also plan to interview Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks and interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo.

New Giants GM Dave Gettleman has described the head coaching job as a “CEO position” and said he is looking for three things: intelligence, vision and toughness.

“You don’t have to be a yeller or screamer to be tough,” Gettleman said Tuesday on WFAN. “I’ve seen guys who aren’t yellers or screamers but players knew there was no messing around.”

While it is believed the Giants want someone with head coaching AP experience, Gettleman said that it is not a necessity.

“Is having previous head coaching experience helpful? Certainly,” he said. “You have a good understanding of the time commitment and what kind of things come at you. We all know no matter how long you’re in it something is going to happen. So is it helpful? Sure. Dealbreaker? No.”

ELI THE MANN, FOR NOW

Gettleman said last week he plans to move forward with Eli Manning as the quarterback, but on Tuesday he left a little bit of doubt in the air.

When asked in an interview on WFAN if he could defend not taking a quarterback in the second pick of the draft, Gettleman said, “When I finish my film work that’s what’s going to tell me which way to go.”

Gettleman said he’s spoken with Manning briefly and plans to sit down with him soon.

“I was only able to see a couple of Giant games front to back and one of them happened to be Philadelphia,” he said. “The guy I saw that day was the guy who put two rings on my fingers, so when I said at the presser I meant, so we’ll continue to evaluate, move forward and continue the process.”

Manning, also talking on WFAN, said he wants to remain a Giant but will need to speak with management to decide if that is the best thing for him.

“If I have the opportunity and they want me to be here and play then that’s what I’m going to do,” he said. “Whatever they choose for next year and the future, hey, I understand it. I’m 37 years old. How many years do I have? They have to have a plan but I hope to be part of the plan.”
