Travel the world without leaving the city

This spring, Flushing Town Hall brings the world to your doorstep. Illustrating its mission to provide global arts to a global community, the cultural destination is often dubbed “a hidden gem” in the most diverse region in the country.

With warmer spring weather afoot, there’s no reason not to head to Flushing, Queens for performances, workshops, jazz jams, visual arts, and a roster of other activities appealing to audiences of all ages.

This weekend illustrates the venue’s diverse programming. On Sunday afternoon, Flushing Town Hall presents Joan Soriano, who blends Afro-Dominican sacred traditions of palo and gaga with bachata (and the event starts with a dance lesson!).

As NPR said, “Soriano is an essential piece of bachata’s story.” Soriano will impart his music with a down-to-earth spirit and danceability. And affordable tickets start at $10 for members and students, and $16 for non-members.

Flushing Town Hall’s commitment to bring world music to Queens continues with the return of its popular Global Mashup series in April—when artists from different regions each perform a set, then play an impromptu jam together for the final act—the birth of a new sound.

The five-part Global Mashup series begins when Latin Boogaloo Meets Afrobeat on April 20, when Spanglish Fly, New York City’s only band dedicated to reviving and renewing Latin Boogaloo’s soul and R&B mix, meets Chop and Quench, featuring members of the cast and band of Broadway’s FELA! The Musical.

Flushing Town Hall is offering discounts when audiences buy tickets to the series, which also features: Egypt Meets Haiti on May 4, Mexico Meets Guinea on May 18, Balkans Meets El Barrio on June 1, and Texas Meets Peru on June 15.

An affordable, family-friendly venue, Flushing Town Hall consistently introduces something fresh and fun for virtually everyone. Young ones will enjoy the innovative Paper: A Wordless Tale of Life presented by Sweden’s Kulturhuset Stadsteaterns Marionetteatern on April 22, and the United Kingdom’s Unicorn Theatre’s presentation of The Polar Bears Go Up on April 28.

And the landmark institution also will spice up Spring with music from Egypt, Haiti, Mexico, Guinea, and Peru.

This season, Flushing Town Hall is opening its doors to teenagers—all 13 to 19 yearolds (members and non-members) can attend any performance for free, a program designed to foster a greater love in the arts and culture.

Flushing Town Hall is accessible by car, bus, train and foot – located a short distance from the 7 train - at 137-35 Northern Blvd. Your experience begins by visiting www.flushingtownhall.org.
