THE NEWS SAYS: Trump is right, kill Gateway.

-

Ok. Ok. This is heresy in New York, but we have to say it. We give in. Donald Trump is right. Amtrak’s nine-component, multi-phase, multi-decade, $30 billion plan for all kinds of bridges and tunnels and stations for trans-Hudson rail called Gateway needs to die.

The overwrought monstrosity needs to die in order for the infrastructure New York, the Northeast and the nation really need to be born.

Here’s what we here in the heart of the country’s most important rail corridor have to have, and relatively quick:

A new two-track tunnel under the Hudson, to alleviate commuter train congestion and repair old, Sandy-damaged tubes. Meantime, the ancient Portal Bridge over the Hackensack River, which swings open for tug boats pushing sludge barges (and which Amtrak stupidly had stuck open during Friday’s a.m. rush), must be replaced.

But though the plan known as Gateway would in theory get us those two things, it’s so elaborate and expensive, it’s never gonna happen. So it winds up drowning the baby in bathwater. Under the Obama administration, its estimated cost was a pricey $20 billion. After, over time, typical bureaucratic mission creep took hold.

They’ve got to stop digging if they have any hopes to start digging.

Trump, nursing a grudge against Sen. Chuck Schumer, sees only the huge price tag — and is refusing to let the feds spend a single penny. So singular is his obsession, he’s pledging to veto the entire federal budget just to deep-six Gateway.

We can’t endorse the President’s pettiness, but neither can we defend the project’s gargantuan scope and cost.

And the truth is, there’s actually a way that everyone can win here.

Let’s build this the smart way, Mr. President — you like to do that, don’t you? Let’s make a deal, Mr. President — you like deals, don’t you?

Step one: Junk Amtrak’s dream of replacing the 23-foot high Portal Bridge with a 55-foot high super fancy, sky-high new $1.6 billion Portal North. Followed by a second super fancy, skyhigh, $1.6 billion Portal South bridge later on.

Put four tracks on a single, low bridge, saving billions. And use White House clout to get speedy Coast Guard and environmental approvals.

Then, fuggedabout the crazy plans to raze a chunk of midtown to build a new extended Penn Station. Far too expensive, totally unnecessary.

Build the four-track low bridge. Dig the tunnel. Done right, it’ll cost $11 billion, not $30 billion.

That’s a deal to which the President can and should force to happen.

Push aside the budget-busting and time-wasting government bureaucrats. No more Gateway. Do it the Trump way.
