Macy’s flower power

- BY ARIEL SCOTTI

IT MIGHT not feel like spring just yet, but inside Macy’s there are over 1 million flowers in full bloom.

The buds and blossoms overflowing from every available perch are there to celebrate the famed Herald Square department store’s 44th annual Flower Show.

This year, the floralfilled creation, dubbed “Once Upon a Springtime,” takes visitors on a stroll through the story of four sisters and the lush and vibrant fantasy land where they live.

“Winter is the evil queen in our story,” Macy’s Creative Director Rick Pomer told the Daily News. “The sister seasons and Dagny, our flower-breathing dragon, are fighting against her for spring’s return.” Pomer said that there are over 200 different species in the show that are switched out when need be during the course of its two week run — from March 25 through April 8.

Upon entering through the front doors into the main mezzanine, customers will walk through a bloomdraped castle tower, decorated with archways designed to mimic the pages of a story book.

Walking through the display of bountiful bouquets brings them through the fairytale’s chapters — past Dagny spewing red, orange and yellow blossoms, the winter queen’s white orchidcovered throne, a flora and fauna-inspired ladybug tea party and an enchanted forest.

“You can encounter the show from wherever you enter the store,” Pomer told the News. “You’ll get the full fantasy effect from anywhere.”
