Superstar helps African nation get clean water
We can see your halo, Beyoncé. The singer is using her platform to help provide thousands of people with access to clean water. The pop superstar — whose BEYGOOD4BURUNDI campaign aims to bring water to Burundi, a country in East Africa — is teaming up with the luxury brand Gucci to help construct 80 wells there. Gucci pledged $1 million to the cause — a contribution that will deliver water to 120,000 people in Burundi.
Beyoncé, 36, founded BEYGOOD4BURUNDI alongside UNICEF last June in an effort to aid those in a nation where many do not have regular access to water. The “Halo” singer’s website states that only 60% of people in Burundi have access to safe water, and that more than 2 million people in the country must spend more than 30 minutes every day just to gather water.
Burundi has a population of more than 10.5 million people. Beyoncé seeks to provide almost half a million in Burundi with clean water through this initiative. There were 35 wells built in Burundi last year.
With the installation of wells, fewer girls have to face the threat of being attacked while they venture out to get water, the magazine notes.
Gucci and Beyoncé are joined in their partnership by the Chime for Change campaign, which aims to empower and unite girls and women across the globe.
Gucci launched the campaign in 2013, with Beyoncé serving as a co-founder along with actress Salma Hayek.
