VA chief could be ousted this week
PRESIDENT TRUMP plans to oust his embattled veterans affairs secretary amid an extraordinary rebellion at the agency and damaging government investigations into his alleged spending abuses, three administration officials said Sunday.
Two officials said an announcement on David Shulkin could happen this week, subject to Trump’s final decision as the White House hones in on possible replacements.
One official rated Shulkin’s chances of being pushed out in the next day or two at “fifty-fifty.” A blistering report by the VA’s watchdog found Shulkin improperly accepted Wimbledon tickets and his staff doctored emails to justify his wife traveling with him at taxpayer expense.
Trump, who spent the weekend at Mar-a-Lago, told associates he would keep two other officials who have been under fire: chief of staff John Kelly and Housing Secretary Ben Carson. Neither the White House nor Shulkin responded to a request for comment.
