Prez rule makes no census: pols
NEW YORK lawmakers bashed the Trump administration’s decision to add a question on citizenship to the federal census and said they’ll fight to block the query from being included.
Reps. Grace Meng (D-Queens) and Nydia Velazquez (D-N.Y.) are sponsoring legislation that would bar the Commerce Department from changing the census form without congressional approval.
The Constitution requires “that the census count every living person — not every citizen, not just people who can vote, but every living human being,” Meng said Wednesday at news conference at the Manhattan office of the New York Immigration Coalition.
“Many immigrants who are already terrified of being deported and targeted will simply choose not to participate out of fear that the information they provide will be used to target them,” she said.
