Cameras for ranking cops
HUNDREDS OF NYPD sergeants and lieutenants are slated to be equipped with body cameras next week, police union officials said Thursday.
A dozen precincts across the city will start giving body-worn cameras to its ranking officers on Monday, according to an email received by the sergeants’ and lieutenants’ unions.
“It came as a surprise to us that we were going to do that,” Lieutenants Benevolent Association president Lou Turco said. “Body cameras are something that we’re open to, but it’s a mandatory subject of bargaining.”
Sergeants Benevolent Association head Ed Mullins said he’s also open to body cameras, since they’re “proven to clear alleged police misconduct,” but objects to the NYPD ’s practice of quickly releasing videos of officer-involved shootings.
By year’s end, about 17,000 cops are expected to get cameras.
