pitchers, and become a more patient hitter who will take walks rather than chase pitches in the name of trying to hit home runs.

“The coaches have been stressing to make sure you get your pitch, and I think you’re seeing that already with our lineup,” Frazier said. “The home runs are going to come, we’ll be able to manufacture runs, especially when you see what guys like Nimmo and Plawecki and Rosario did today.”

Then there is Jay Bruce, who talked about a commitment the players are making to get the most out of this offense, in part with a thinking man’s approach that usually will be tied to scouting reports.

On this day, in fact, the Mets were well aware Martinez could get a bit wild, and as nasty as his stuff can be, they were determined not to chase to put him in favorable counts and make life easy on him.

“We have veteran guys who understand the game,” was the way Bruce put it. “You don’t want to be the one to take the bad at-bat.

“As talented as Carlos Martinez is, the wheels can start falling off sometimes, and you’ve gotta let it happen.”

Ultimately that approach paid off. Though the Mets let Martinez off the hook early, they finally knocked him out with a five-run rally in the fifth inning.

All of which had Callaway nodding his head afterward, saying the players were applying the teachings of hitting coach Pat Roessler and his staff, taking a smart approach to the plate.

Or as he put it: “Going up and swinging for the fences isn’t going to work.” That doesn’t mean the Mets aren’t going to need Cespedes to win his share of games with home runs. Same for Bruce and Frazier and Michael Conforto when he comes back. nd the long ball is always going to make more headlines, as Stanton did with his smashing opener in Toronto. But for a team trying to re-establish a winning culture, the Mets were more than happy on this day to set a tone, proving they could prevail without going deep.
