YANK GAMEDAY

GAME 5: April 3, 2018 Where: Yankee Stadium

- By MIKE MAZZEO

Yes, Sir! Didi Gregorius unloaded in the Yankees’ home opener, finishing with a pair of threerun homers and a career-high eight RBI as the Bombers crushed the Rays 11-4 on Tuesday at rain-soaked Stadium.

It was the most RBI for a Yankee in a single game since Alex Rodriguez had 10 against the Angels on April 26, 2005 when he hit three homers off Bartolo Colon. It was the most RBI by a shortstop in a single game in Yankee history.

Gregorius had four hits, including a double and a two-run single, and a walk. He earned two curtain calls for his efforts. Chants of “Di-di! Di-di!” were frequent throughout.

The 28-year-old shortstop’s career day overshadowed another awful performance from the bullpen, which has now given up a staggering 14 earned runs in the season’s first five games.

Rather infamously, Giancarlo Stanton had a Platinum Sombrero — going 0-for-5 with five strikeouts — in his Bronx debut and was booed on his last two Ks.

With the game tied at 4-4 in the seventh, Tyler Austin doubled and scored on Brett Gardner’s sacrifice bunt that got thrown away. Aaron Judge singled — and, following Stanton’s fourth strikeout of the day — Gregorius drilled his second three-run shot into the second deck in right for some insurance.

Gregorius added a two-run single in the eighth.
