NJ Transit suspended service on several rail lines amid the downpour, including the River Line Service, Hudson Bergen Light Rail Service and North Jersey Coast Line.

Adding to the woes for Hudson Bergen Light Rail riders was a disabled train that caused 30-minute delays amid the deluge, the rail service reported in a tweet. Drivers had it much worse. Cars’ tires were submerged under flooded highways and dirty water lapped at some hoods up and down the West Side Highway.

Across the Hudson River, the windy rainstorm also flooded the streets of Jersey City.

On Staten Island, a minivan became submerged on Bayview Ave. near Hylan Blvd. in Princes Bay about 8:45 a.m., officials said. Rescuers pushed the vehicle out of the water and nobody was injured, according to the FDNY.

In Newark, the fire department’s urban water rescue unit plucked at least six people from submerged vehicles in the Ironbound section, adjacent to the Passaic River, Monday morning.

The rescue unit used rafts and other equipment to bring motorists to higher ground, Newark police said in a public safety notice.

Travelers flying out of Kennedy and other local airports also were grounded by the powerful storm. Flights were expected to be normal for travelers Tuesday.
