Gleyber is pulled over stiff back

-

THIS isn’t what the Yankees and their fans wanted to hear: Gleyber Torres exited Monday night’s game with Triple-A Scranton after experiencing back stiffness while playing in cold-weather conditions in Gwinnett, Ga., Brian Cashman said. The GM had no more details than that. The issue isn’t believed to be serious, but rather more of a precautionary situation.

Torres, 21, who was starting at third base, came out in the fifth inning after two at-bats.

The Bombers would be able to promote Torres on Wednesday while still gaining an extra year of control.

In 11 minor-league games, Torres is hitting .366.

WHAT THE ELL?

No joke: Jacoby Ellsbury has yet another injury. This one is to his plantar fascia, which has delayed him starting baseball activity in Tampa.

“It came up sometime last week,” manager Aaron Boone said. “I think he’s had it at times in the past. I don’t think it’s a serious thing or serious issue, but it is something that’s popped up along the way with his hip stuff.”

Ellsbury also missed all of the spring with an oblique injury, which has since gotten better, according to Boone, but then a hip injury popped up, delaying his rehab further. “We just got to get him right,” Boone said. Ellsbury, 34, is due $68 million over the next three seasons.

AUSTIN DECISION LOOMING

Tyler Austin could have his appeal of his fivegame suspension heard on Thursday, he said. Austin was suspended for fighting in Wednesday’s Yankees-Red Sox brawl. Boston’s Joe Kelly was suspended six games.

BIRD WATCH

Greg Bird, who is recovering from having a bone spur surgically removed from his ankle, was on the field before batting practice on Monday playing catch in the outfield.

“He’s moving in the right direction and looks like he’s kind of passed every test so far,” Boone said.

DONNIE BASEBALL

The right field “Bleacher Creatures” had Yankee Stadium briefly feeling like the 1980s again.

The fans chanted “Don-nie Base-ball!” for Marlins manager Don Mattingly as part of their roll call in the first inning.

JACKIE ROBINSON DAY

The Yankees and Tigers will celebrate Jackie Robinson Day during the second game of their doubleheader on June 4 after Sunday’s doubleheader was postponed. All players, coaches and managers will wear No. 42 ... Brandon Drury took batting practice and ground balls on Monday for the first time since he was placed on the disabled list with migraines and blurry vision on April 7. The 25-year-old infielder said he is taking anti-inflammatories to treat his symptoms and is awaiting results of tests he had done last week.

“I want nothing more than to go out there and play baseball with a clear vision and clear head and help this team win ball games,” Drury said.
