Eagles talking White House

- BY EVAN GROSSMAN

If the Eagles do visit President Trump at the White House, perhaps owner Jeff Lurie can expand on what he meant when he said this is “one (expletive) disastrous presidency” last year.

According to reports, the White House and the Eagles are working on the details of a potential Super Bowl visit, but that was before Lurie’s comments, from last year’s anthem-protest meetings, were published. According to the New York Times, Lurie blasted Trump last year after one player raised concerns that they could not trust owners, many of whom supported Trump in the election.

The left-leaning Lurie was not one of them: he backed Hillary Clinton in 2016.

“Many of us have no interest in supporting President Trump,” Lurie said, according to The Times. “Yes, there are some. There are some players who do, too.

“But this is not where you brandish a group of people because they own assets in a sport we love, supporting what many of us perceive as, you know, one (expletive) disastrous presidency.”

“Don’t quote me,” Lurie reportedly added.

Arguably, no team in the NFL leans further left than the Birds, from Lurie to several players that have made social activism a priority. Malcolm Jenkins, Chris Long, Torrey Smith and LeGarrette Blount have all said they would not attend a meeting with Trump. Jenkins has referred to Trump as a “troll.”

Long, who donated his 2017 salary to charity, has said Trump’s comments after the race clashes in Charlottesville are a non-starter for any dialogue that could take place between he and the president.
