Council drive to curb e-hails
A NEW FIGHT over reining in Uber kicked off Wednesday as legislation was introduced to slap restrictions and fees on e-hail services.
City Councilman Ruben Diaz Sr. (D-Bronx) introduced the bill — which would charge $2,000 a year for every vehicle driven for an app-based service, a fee drivers would pay.
Uber, the largest player in the industry, has nearly 70,000 cars on the street. Under the bill, Uber and other companies would also have to pay $20,000 a year for licenses.
The bill would also create a new category of city regulations for app-based for-hire services.
Yellow-cab and black-car drivers rallied at City Hall in favor of the bill, which the app services said would leave their drivers in poverty.
