Budenholzer, Hawks part ways
Mike Budenholzer is a free agent. The coach and the Hawks mutually agreed to a separation, according to ESPN, meaning the Knicks wouldn’t have to give up compensation to hire the 2015 Coach of the Year.
The move would also suggest that Budenholzer is confident that he can land another job. The 48-year-old had two years and roughly $14 million remaining on his deal, but received permission to speak with the Knicks and Suns about their vacancies.
Budenholzer reportedly withdrew his name for the Suns job but remains a candidate to coach the Knicks. He is also, arguably, the most accomplished candidate after guiding the Hawks to four consecutive playoff appearances. However, last season the Hawks began a long rebuild and fell to the bottom of the Eastern Conference with 58 defeats. Budenholzer was troubled with the direction and, as a source told the Daily News last week, “Bud’ wants out of Atlanta.”
Budenholzer’s status could open the doors for more opportunities. Currently the Magic, Hornets, Suns and Knicks have openings. The Bucks are expected to replace their interim coach, and maybe the Trail Blazers join the market. The Knicks have already talked to Budenholzer, David Fizdale, Jerry Stackhouse, Mark Jackson, Kenny Smith, Mike Woodson and, according to a report, Celtics assistant Jim Larranaga. They flew overseas to meet with David Blatt and Spurs assistant James Borrego is also on New York’s calendar.
