Paralympians rip Don’s ‘tough to watch’ slap
PARALYMPIC GAMES organizers hope President Trump will tune into future events even though he finds them “tough to watch.”
“We hope the US President continues to watch and be inspired by the Paralympics,” organizers tweeted Saturday, after Trump’s insensitive remarks drew ire on social media.
Organizers touted the games’ expanded viewership.
“Record numbers around the world are not finding @Paralympics tough to watch. Billions of viewers now take in the Paralympics in hundreds of countries around the world,” the International Paralympic Committee said on Twitter.
The games allow athletes with a range of disabilities to compete.
Trump praised the athletes and said he was inspired by their exploits.
“What happened with the Paralympics was so incredible and so inspiring to me,” Trump told members of the Olympic and Paralympic teams.
He then suggested that the games made him uncomfortable and he’d been unable to watch a lot of the competition.
“And I watched — it’s a little tough to watch too much, but I watched as much as I could,” Trump said from the White House.
Trump delivered the seemingly insensitive remarks Friday while surrounded by members of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic teams, whom he congratulated for competing in PyeongChang last month.
A person familiar with the situation told the Daily News that Trump was referring to his schedule, which prevented him from viewing all of the games.
NBC News host Chris Hayes agreed that the comment likely referred to the the President’s busy agenda.
“So I’ve listened to this way more than I should’ve, and I *think* I’ve come to conclude he means it’s tough to watch too much because he’s so busy being president,” he tweeted.
A number of Olympic athletes were absent from Friday’s celebration, including Adam Rippon, who outwardly rejected Trump’s invitation.
Rippon, who is the first openly gay athlete to qualify for the Winter Olympics, said he decided not to attend because he “will not stand with people who discriminate against those that they perceive as different.”
“In lieu of going to DC, I have donated to a few of my favorite causes,” he tweeted.
Rippon said he had “no regrets” about missing the visit after hearing Trump’s controversial remarks.
