Cuomo homes in on P.R. help

- Erin Durkin

GOV. CUOMO jetted to Puerto Rico on Sunday to kick off the latest New York efforts to help the island recover from Hurricane Maria.

The latest push will focus on rebuilding homes, with a tactical assessment team deployed to come up with a construction plan.

Hundreds of CUNY and SUNY students will head for Puerto Rico to start rebuilding homes in June, after a SUNY Maritime College team arrives with building supplies in May.

“The federal government should have and could have done a better job for Puerto Rico,” Cuomo said at a roundtable in San Juan.

“The frustration at the injustice that has been done to Puerto Rico is real and palpable in New York, and you should know that.”

It’s Cuomo’s third trip to Puerto Rico since Maria hit last September, plunging most of the island into darkness.

“Unfortunately, the crisis is still unabated. Unfortunately, the federal government never really stepped up to the plate the way we would hope,” the governor said at JFK Airport before departing for the single-day trip.
