J’ouvert slay jury sees vid of crowd panic
VIDEO OF A J’OUVERT shooting in Brooklyn that killed an aide to Gov. Cuomo showed frightened partygoers ducking in doorways, cowering in corners and scrambling for safety as shots rang out.
At a trial for four people accused of murder in the September 2015 death of Carey Gabay, 43, jurors got a look at the chaos that ensued during the predawn festival when police said rival gang members traded shots on a Crown Heights street.
A stray bullet struck Gabay, as the Empire State Development Corp. attorney was scrambling for safety in an Ebbets Field Houses parking lot just off Bedford Ave. He was taken off life support about a week later.
Gabay’s brother, Aaron McNaughton, had to step out of the courtroom as the clip played.
Brooklyn prosecutors say alleged gunmen Stanley Elianor, Keith Luncheon, Micah Alleyne and Kenny Bazile created a “zone of danger” with their bullet barrage. The men insist prosecutors can’t pin Gabay’s death on them, and some say they weren’t even there.
One camera showed an armed man darting into a building after revelers had already rushed in. The camera showed the man has “SKO” tattooed on his right forearm. Authorities later said they matched that tattoo to Bazile.
