Get out there, people

-

This weekend, use your feet to celebrate the greatest city in the world. On Saturday, the energetic can walk the Great Saunter, the annual 32-mile, 12-hour stroll around the entire Manhattan shore. Started in 1984 by Cy Adler and his Shorewalkers group, participation has grown from a handful to more than 1,000, about whom half will finish.

The Saunter steps off at 7:30 this morning from Fraunces Tavern downtown and heads south to the Battery, then up the Hudson and down the Harlem and East Rivers, and back to the tavern.

Latecomers can start at 9:30 a.m. at the Circle Line terminal at 42nd St. or at the lunch break at 1 p.m. near the flagpole in Inwood Hill Park.

For the less energetic, the New York Landmarks Conservancy is running its eighth annual free Sacred Sites Open House, where 61 religious institutions in all five boroughs will open their doors on Saturday and Sunday for all to enjoy the art and architecture of these historic buildings.

And there’s even more, with the Municipal Art Society’s eighth annual Jane’s Walk: a plethora of fascinating free neighborhood explorations in every borough, 94 on Saturday and 73 on Sunday, inspired by urban activist Jane Jacobs.

As much as we all love our vibrant, complicated, strange, beautiful, changing city, we don’t see enough of it. So get off your couch, lace up your shoes and start walking.
