Mesoraco sees both

- BY KRISTIE ACKERT

CINCINNATI — It took about 15 minutes for Devin Mesoraco’s world to turn upside down. One minute he was in the familiar Reds home clubhouse, getting dressed to catch Luis Castillo’s start against the Mets. A tap on the shoulder and a talk with Reds GM Dick Williams later, the catcher was taking off his Reds shorts, throwing on his street pants and walking down the hallway at Great American Ball Park to the visitors’ clubhouse still in his Reds’ team socks and shower shoes.

The Mets traded away one-time ace Matt Harvey for Mesoraco, the one-time AllStar with years of injury issues, less than an hour before the two teams played Tuesday. Mesoraco was in uniform and pinch hit for the Mets in the ninth inning of their 7-2 loss.

“It was super weird. Just kind of surreal,” said Mesoraco. “It was nice to know Todd (Frazier) and know Jay (Bruce), they introduced me to some guys.

“It’s a whirlwind. It’s a lot to have happen in 15 minutes, being with a whole new club, when you’ve been over there for 10 years,” Mesoraco said. “It’s definitely a whirlwind, but I am thankful that the Mets showed some faith and are going to give me an opportunity.”

The Mets were specifically looking for catching help with Travis d’Arnaud out for the season after suffering a torn ulnar collateral ligament. Kevin Plawecki is also on the disabled list after suffering a hairline fracture in his left hand.
