Yanks feeling effects of Kahnle, Warren injuries

-

It’s been overlooked because of all the winning they’ve done — and understandably so — but the Yankees have begun to feel the effects of not having the injured Tommy Kahnle and Adam Warren in their bullpen. On Thursday night, Aaron Boone — short on arms — stuck with Dellin Betances for the seventh and eighth innings after the Bombers scored four times in the seventh to tie the game.

But for the third time this season, the rookie manager was burned for that decision.

It was a cheap Yankee Stadium home run Betances gave up to J.D. Martinez to lead off the eighth, sure. Still, it was a homer nonetheless — the deciding run in the Yankees’ 5-4 loss to the Red Sox in the Bronx.

Betances did manage to retire six of the seven batters he faced while striking out three. But all anyone will remember is the one guy he didn’t get out, his 97 mph inside fastball landing just out of Aaron Judge’s reach, a fan grabbing it in the first row in right. Judge, for his part, didn’t think there was any interference on the play.

Betances has now given up runs all three times he’s pitched a second inning in 2018.

“I think we can (get two innings out of him). I really do feel like he’s in a good place,” the always positive Boone said, this being one of those nights you could understand where he was coming from.

“It wasn’t ideal tonight in that we were short in the bullpen a little bit. He wouldn’t have gone back out there had we not tied it. I think he’s in a good place and I think he’s an important part of our team that no I have no issues with that.”

Presumably, Boone meant that the Bombers didn’t have Chad Green, who had pitched in each of the previous two games. Green himself has had problems of late, getting beat with his second best pitch — a slider that hung — by both Carlos Correa in Houston a week ago and Hanley Ramirez at the Stadium on Wednesday.

Granted, he rarely if ever pitches back-to-back days — the last time being April 5-6 — but with the team in a bullpen bind, that changed. Aroldis Chapman also pitched in the previous two games, notching a pair of saves.

Betances, an All-Star the last four season, has now given up four homers this season after giving up three all of last season. His ERA is 5.63.

“You’ve got to give him credit,” Betances said of Martinez going the other way with his inside heater. “It was
