Ma in DWI crash that hurts 3 kids

- BY LAURA DIMON

A LONG ISLAND mother was driving drunk with her three kids when she careened into a tree a block from their home, injuring the children along with another passenger, officials charged.

Tyleen Smith, 36, lost control of her 2004 Saturn Vue SUV on West Yaphank Road in Coram just after 6 a.m., smashing into a tree near Carr Lane, according to Suffolk County police.

Smith’s 11-year-old twins, a boy and a girl, suffered broken bones and were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, officials said.

Smith, her 8-year-old son, and a woman riding in the passenger seat sustained minor injuries.

Smith was charged with three counts of endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger, also known as Leandra’s Law. Her arraignment was scheduled for Tuesday.

Leandra’s Law is named after Leandra Rosado, an 11-year-old Chelsea girl killed in a booze-fueled crash on the Henry Hudson Parkway in 2009.

Carmen Huertas, the mother of Leandra’s friend, was drunk and speeding when she lost control of her car. Six other children were injured in that crash. Huertas is serving 12 years in prison for Leandra’s death.
