Hate raps after cemetery spray
A MAN faces hate crime charges after allegedly spray painting swastikas on more than 100 tombstones in Illinois over Memorial Day weekend.
Timothy McLean, 34, was arrested Saturday — hours after nearly 200 graves were vandalized at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Glen Carbon.
The cemetery has over 1,300 veterans’ graves.
Cemetery officials scrambled to remove the paint before an event on Memorial Day.
McLean was charged with three counts of institutional vandalism and 14 counts of damaging property for vandalizing the graves and homes in the Edwardsville neighborhood, the Belleville News-Democrat reported.
A motive for the vandalism remains unknown. McLean has been previously arrested for harassment, property damage and drug possession, the paper reported.
