CC gets needled regularly

-

CC Sabathia received his latest injection in his troublesome right knee about 12 days ago, Aaron Boone said. “Sometimes after a start he’ll have one,” Boone said Tuesday before Sabathia pitched five innings in the Yankees’ 6-5, 10-inning victory over the Astros. “He’s not due for one as far as I know, anytime soon.”

Sabathia thought he might need to retire after re-injuring his right knee during an Aug. 8 start in Toronto last season. But tests on it proved otherwise.

He has received regular injections in his knee for maintenance.

The 37-year-old lefty is currently playing on a one-year, $10 million deal he signed to stay in the Bronx during the offseason.

Sabathia came in having allowed 15 runs in his previous three starts after allowing nine runs in his first six starts.

On Tuesday night, he allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits. He walked two and struck out four.

“I felt good,” Sabathia said. “My stuff felt a lot crisper.”

GLEYBER GOOD

Here’s another first: 21-year-old rookie Gleyber Torres was named AL Player of the Week.

It’s the first time Torres has garnered player of the week honors in his short career.

Torres posted a slash line of .368/.429/1.158 with five runs scored, seven hits, five home runs and nine RBI over six games in the period ending May 27.

Torres hit fifth on Monday but was back in the No. 9 hole for Tuesday’s game against Houston.

“I personally believe that’s where Gleyber is at his best in that I think he’s equipped to handle all that the Major Leagues are going to throw at him and what being a Yankee and playing in New York and all that’s going to come his way,” Boone said.

“I feel like his foundation and who he is will allow him to deal with anything that comes his way.”

WARREN REPORT

Adam Warren’s rehab from a back injury has been transferred to Double-A Trenton.

Warren allowed four runs and got two outs in his first minor-league rehab appearance on May 26 for Triple-A Scranton.

Boone, though, wasn’t concerned about Warren physically despite his poor outing.

The 30-year-old has been on the disabled list since April 21.
