Shelter to aid youth up to 24

- Erin Durkin

THE CITY will open its first shelter for young adults up to age 24, part of $9.5 million in new spending to combat homelessness among LGBT youth.

The 20-bed facility will open by the end of the year and house people between the ages of 21 and 24, Mayor de Blasio’s wife, Chirlane McCray, said at City Hall Wednesday.

Gay young people have much higher rates of homelessness than their straight peers.

“Many LGBT New Yorkers come from loving, supportive families but many do not,” McCray said. “It is also our responsibility to make sure that young people with nowhere else to turn always have a safe, supportive and welcoming place to go.”
