3 teens die as driver, 15, flips stolen SUV
THREE TEENAGERS died Friday when the overloaded stolen SUV they were riding in flipped over on Long Island, state police said.
The chaotic crash happened near Jones Beach — on the southbound Meadowbrook State Parkway between Exits M9 and M10 in Hempstead at about 11:42 a.m., officials said.
The driver, 15-year-old Cindy Sanchez, was speeding and lost control of the 2005 Chevy TrailBlazer — which was reported stolen Thursday in Roosevelt, police said.
The SUV — with 10 people inside — overturned several times before landing in the marsh on the side of the highway, State Police Maj. David Candelaria said at the crash scene.
“The vehicle veered to the left and the operator overcorrected and overturned several times,” Candelaria said.
The vehicle tumbled for several hundred feet, officials said.
Herbert Leo Aviles Maravilla, 16, Marlon Carbajal, 15, and David Sanchez, 13, were all thrown from the car and killed.
Sanchez, five other young people and an 18-month-old child suffered minor injuries and were treated at area hospitals, Candelaria said.
“She is conscious,” Candelaria said about Sanchez. “We are in the process of talking to her.
“We have witness statements that reported that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and driving erratically,” he added. “One witness traveling in the same direction said it came up behind him and swerved around him before the crash.”
There was no indication that Sanchez, who did not have a license, was racing anyone before the accident, Candelaria said.
All southbound lanes of Meadowbrook were closed much of Friday, as a the State Troopers’ collision and forensic reconstruction team investigated.
The Nassau County district attorney is also looking into the smash-up.
“Our Vehicular Crimes Assistant District Attorneys were at the scene and participating in this multi-agency investigation that is being led by the New York State Police,” a spokeswoman for Nassau DA Madeline Singas said.
“It is a terrible tragedy and our condolences are with the families of the deceased."
Charges are pending against Sanchez.
