Desk cops hit streets for summer
Nearly 300 cops will get out from behind their desks and hit the streets as part of the NYPD's Summer All Out plan to combat violence, especially by gangs, in problem areas around the city, authorities announced Thursday.
From Friday through Labor Day, 293 officers on administrative positions will go on patrol or be assigned to foot posts in eight precincts, including Harlem, Mott Haven, East Flatbush, Brownsville and Jamaica.
When the initiative started under then-Commissioner William Bratton in 2014, there were concerns some of the officers had been off the streets for too long.
But Chief of Department Terence Monahan said Thursday the reassigned cops will perform well.
“We're all cops,” Monahan said. “All 36,000 that wear a uniform have a responsibility to get out on the street and do police work.”
