- Christopher Brennan

A massive heat wave has killed 33 people in the Canadian province of Quebec.

Authorities said 19 people died from heat-related causes in the past week, including 18 in Montreal, the second-largest city in Canada.

Temperatures reached into the 90s as high humidity increased the suffering in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.

“My thoughts are with the loved ones of those who have died in Quebec during this heat wave. The record temperatures are expected to continue in central and eastern Canada, so make sure you know how to protect yourself and your family,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted.

Civil servants in Quebec city are going door-to-door to check on those who may be most vulnerable, though Mayor Valérie Plante also urged her fellow Quebecois to check up on neighbors.

Temperatures in the city are expected to return to the 70s on Friday.
