Activists: Make him Kava-NOT!
Brett Kavanaugh isn’t fit to serve on the Supreme Court because of his views on such issues as abortion, gun control and executive power, women’s rights activists and elected officials declared as they gathered in downtown Manhattan on Tuesday.
Activists from Planned Parenthood and the National Institute for Reproductive Health joined Public Advocate Letitia James, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and Rep. Carolyn Maloney at Foley Square to rail against President Trump’s controversial Supreme Court nominee.
“Hey, hey, ho, ho, Kavanaugh has got to go,” James and the crowd chanted.
“When No. 45 announced his pick for the Supreme Court, my heart dropped because I know what’s at stake,” she said, adding individuals’ “rights are unfortunately under attack.
“Individuals who are concerned about reproductive rights, their rights are under attack,” she added. "Individuals who are concerned about affirmative action, those issues are under attack. Individuals who are concerned about Obamacare, they’re under attack.”
James said that although Kavanaugh’s opposition to net neutrality and a ban on assault weapons raise red flags, what’s most concerning is the possibility of him protecting Trump while special counsel Robert Mueller continues his Russia probe.
“This man believes that the President should be exempt from criminal and civil investigations,” James said. “Basically, that the President of the United States should get a jail-free card.”
Alessandra Moreno, 19, of Washington Heights, said she opposes Kavanaugh’s nomination because she doesn’t want the Supreme Court to overturn Roe vs. Wade, the 1973 decision giving women the right to have an abortion.
