News fotog’s mom dies

- BY ELIZABETH ELIZALDE

The mother of Daily News staff photographer Debbie-Egan Chin died Sunday. She was 89.

Brooklyn-born Anne D. Egan was surrounded by her family in Scottsdale, Ariz., when she died. She had battled congestive heart failure the last few years.

Egan-Chin remembered her beloved mother as the matriarch of the family who devoted her entire life to raising her kids and being a good wife.

“She was a stay-athome mom,” she said. “She was the glue of the entire family.”

She also recalled her mother and father were inseparable.

Egan was just 18 when she married John J. Egan — a World War II Navy veteran — on July 6, 1947. The happy couple lived in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, went on to have six children and enjoyed a life of traveling.

“My father called her ‘The Blond,'” son Jeffrey Egan said. “It captured her vivacious spirit.”

She lived with one of her sons and his family in Arizona after her husband of 57 years died in 2005. He was 78.

Jeffrey Egan, who lives in Chicago, said his mother lit up the room with her electric personality.

“She would call everybody ‘baby' whether she knew you well or didn't know you well,” he said.

“She kept a phone address book, and I made the comment that that was like her Facebook,” he said. “She kept that 50-plus years. The notes in there were unbelievably meticulous and specific. It was like her journal.

“She stayed close with people from across many, many years,” her son added. “All the people she knew in Brooklyn, she would stay in touch with them.”

She always there for her kids.

“She kept track of everybody,” Jeffrey Egan said. “She was that centerpiece for everyone, and everyone knew that. We were all united by my mother.”

Egan was also a devoted “Jeopardy” fan who never missed an episode, and crossword puzzles were her favorite.

Anne D. Egan is survived by her six children: Jackie, Dianne, Brian,Mark,Debbie and Jeffrey, as well as her 15 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and brother Alan. One of her grandchildren, Erin Elizabeth Egan, died July 12, 2008.

A wake will be held at McLaughlin and Sons on Third Ave. and 97th St. in Bay Ridge from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Fourth Ave. and 95th St. in Bay Ridge starting at 10:30 a.m. Monday.

Egan will be laid to rest next to her husband in Calverton National Cemetery on Long Island.
