YANKEES 22-0 vs. Cleveland Indians

August 31, 2004

-

The Bombers’ 22-run drubbing was baseball’s worst shutout defeat since 1883, as the Yankees embarrassed themselves in front of nearly 52,000 fans at the Stadium. Every Indians starter recorded an RBI, led by Omar Vizquel and Victor Martinez who each had four. Javier Vazquez started the game for the Yanks and gave up six earned runs in 11⁄3 innings. Cleveland outhit the Yankees 22-5 in the game. The Indians scored three runs in each of the first three innings then did further damage with a six-run fifth. The embarrassments didn’t end there for the Bombers, sadly, as they would go on to win the division but become the first team in baseball history to blow a 3-0 lead, something they did to the hated Red Sox in the ALCS. “There’s a certain element of embarrassment, no question,” then Yankees manager Joe Torre said after the game.
